WORK to replace ageing traffic lights at a pedestrian crossing in Bridgwater is set to take eight weeks.

The project opposite the Co-op in Westonzoyland Road on the A372 is scheduled to start on Monday (October 25).

Somerset County Council's highways teams is refurbishing the crossing as the current equipment, including the 25-year-old signals, has reached the end of its operational life.

The project, which is part of a £11.6million replacement of Somerset's signals, will see energy-saving LED lights installed.

There will also be detection improvements for vehicles and pedestrians, in addition to wider footways and drainage improvements.

Temporary two-way traffic signals will be in place for the duration of the works, while there will also be a temporary pedestrian crossing.

The work is expected to be completed on Friday, December 17.

There will be a road closure from December 1 to 3 for resurfacing works, but temporary lights will be operated once that phase is completed.

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “This work is essential due to the age of the signals, and it is part of our ongoing investment in highways infrastructure across the county.

“We appreciate that temporary lights can be disruptive in the short-term and we are doing everything we can to keep this to a minimum.

"While work is ongoing, I would encourage road users to plan ahead.”
