UNATTENDED candles caused a property fire in Bridgwater yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, October 19).

Two fire engines from Bridgwater and one from Taunton, as well as an officer, attended the incident.

The fire broke out around 3.30pm.

The blaze was in a ground floor flat, and the cause is believed to have been candles left unattended.

"On arrival the crews confirmed a fire in the ground floor flat," said a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

"Crews donned two breathing apparatus and extinguished the fire with two jets.

"Crews then removed the fridge freezer damaged by fire.

"There was 10 per cent fire damage to the fridge and 70 per cent smoke damage to the property.

"Crews checked the surrounding flats using two thermal imaging cameras and battery operated ventilation equipment."

The fire was out around 5.30pm.
