IT was the end of an era when a nursery school serving the community for almost three decades closed its doors for the final time last month.

The Avenue Nursery School in North Petherton welcomed in its first eight children in 1992 staffed by just two, but it soon grew, reaching its capacity of 20 children looked after by, at times, up to six staff members.

Christine, who is also a qualified teacher said: "I was very touched and overwhelmed by the number of people who joined us to have a catch up and reminisce in the sunshine.

"There was a wonderful mix of past and present children.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent their best wishes, along with those who attended the event, and for the the numerous cards and thoughtful gifts I have received."

Looking forward to retirement but sad to say farewell to the children, Christine added: "It has been a privilege and an honour to have had so many wonderful children to look after, dedicated loyal staff and very supportive parents.

"I miss all of them but they all know that though the Nursery doors are closed, I would still love to catch up with them and hear their news."
