IT was always going to happen. After experiencing glorious sunshine for the the past week, it abruptly comes to an end, just in time for the first weekend of the summer holidays.

But fear not, Somerset offers plenty of indoor fun to keep the kids happy during the wet weather.

We have compiled a list of 10 ways to have fun indoors in the county, so whether you are catering for the adventurous or the studious, excitable youngsters or hard-to-please teens, you should find something to alleviate the boredom.

Inspired by the Olympics

If you've been looking forward to this summer's Olympic action then why not take inspiration from some of Somerset's stars and help burn off energy at the same time?

Follow in the footsteps of Bridgwater's Laura Gallagher and head to trampoline adventure centre Flip Out Somerset in Chelston Business Park, Wellington. It boasts a range of equipment for all ages so is an option for those families with both younger and older children.

Or why not take to the water like Street's Brodie Williams? Wells Leisure Centre, in Charter Way, has a 25m swimming pool and dedicated family interactive pool and is is offering family swim sessions throughout the holidays.

Hands-on fun

Somerset is blessed with some fantastic museums, many of which lay on special activities over the summer, so check out what's happening near you.

The Museum of Somerset's summer exhibition, The World of Martin Brown: Horrible Histories and Other Dazzling Drawings, has its launch event today, where youngsters can meet and draw with Martin himself.

At the seaside

Just because the sun isn't shining, it doesn't mean you have to cancel your trip to the seaside. Minehead EYE skatepark offers youngsters a great day out - indoors - or for some old fashioned fun, head for Britain's shortest pier in Burnham-on-Sea.

For teens

You can't beat a trip to the movies to keep teens occupied - either take in a family film together or let them catch up with mates after not seeing each other for a few days!

Ten-pin bowling is another great option, so head for Hollywood Bowl in either Taunton or Yeovil to test which family member has the best strike rate.

For history buffs

If you want to immerse yourself in Somerset's past, you won't go far wrong with a National Trust property. Many historic properties are welcoming guests back indoors again such as Dunster Castle, Lytes Cary Manor, Montacute House and Tyntesfield.

To check opening arrangements, check the National Trust website before heading out.

Get crafty

Create a keepsake and have fun in the process by having a go at painting your own pottery. Art to Art, in Station Road, Taunton, offers drop-in sessions, but it's worth calling ahead if you are going to be travelling far.

For culture

Somerset's theatres have events happening all summer long.

The Brewhouse in Taunton is offering a free event today called Boxes. It is a dynamic piece of theatre about the need for, and value of, hope

For little ones, the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil starts a run of shows tomorrow with In the Night Garden Live: Igglepiggles Busy Day.

For the competitive

For competitive families, head to South West Carting for a race around the track, at the Haynes Motors Museum in Sparkford.

There's also a spectator area for those who prefer life in the slow lane.

Get outdoors

For the most fun you can have outdoors on a rainy day, head to the shelter of Wookey Hole Caves near Wells.

Staying in

If you fancy some relaxing days in, you can always become a wild world hero with Somerset Libraries Summer Reading Challenge.

The theme was inspired by nature and developed in partnership with the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) and encourages children aged four to 11 to borrow and read any six library books over the summer.
