A MAIN road in Watchet is set to close for FIVE days - just as Covid-19 restrictions are set to end.

The closure, on Swain Street, will be in place so Wessex Water can connect a new customers property to their water and wastewater networks.

John Richards, chairman of Watchet Chamber of Trade (WACET) says July 19 until 23 is a 'crazy time of year' to do the works.

He says the businesses rely on the passing trade on the way to and from Minehead, but this wont happen with the road closure in place for five days.

"This will mean that no one can get through or into the main Watchet car parks from Minehead direction and the usual signs put out always stop people travelling that way, if even it says businesses still open," he said.

"Most of the businesses might as well close for the week!

"It is a crazy time of year to try and do this and in the daytime as well.

"Also, if there is any accident or blockage on the main road, Watchet is the main diversion route."

Wessex Water said a full road closure was needed and they 'apologise for inconvenience caused to residents and motorists'.

A spokesperson for the company said: "This work is required to connect a new customer’s property to our water and wastewater networks.

"Unfortunately a full road closure was required as the road width would not allow us to carry out the work safely and allow vehicles to pass.

"The closure will be in place 24-hours each day from 19 to 23 July."

Somerset County Council (SCC) Highways has said road closures are 'always a last resort'.

“The utility company needs to carry out these works for a new service connection and due to the width of the road a closure is necessary to ensure the safety of the public and workforce," said a spokesperson for SCC.

"We're working closely with the firm to make sure the duration of the works is minimised as much as possible to reduce potential disruption.”
