WORK on 130 new homes, which will be built on a former deer park owned by King Henry II, started this week.

Infrastructure work has begun on the Royal View development site in North Petherton.

The plans were approved at a Sedgemoor District Council (SDC) meeting last June, and housebuilder Barratt Homes hoped to start work in April this year.

Barratt Homes is creating two, three and four bedroom homes with 30 per cent of those being affordable. Construction work is set to start next month once the infrastructure work is complete.

The development is being created using timber frames, which will be built using off-site construction methods.

The frame is then brought onto site, which means the homes can be built faster and more efficiently.

During construction, the development will support more than 400 jobs and generate more than £1.5million in tax revenue.

Andrea Pilgrim, sales director at Barratt Bristol, said it is "exciting" to see the works starting.

"With a range of different types of homes being built, we are confident that Royal View will become a vibrant, balanced community for the area.

"It has plenty to offer including beautiful countryside and a farm shop on its doorstep, fantastic walks down the river Parrett and play areas for families to enjoy."

Royal View will also include two new play areas and cycle paths. Residents will also be able to apply for Green Travel Vouchers, which can be used to help buy bicycles and other sustainable forms of transport.
