FIREFIGHTERS were sent to tackle a bonfire that had got out of control in a village between Taunton and Bridgwater this afternoon (Monday).

The bonfire at Coxhill, North Newton, has reported to be spreading to nearby wood piles and was no longer contained when the 999 was made call at 2.37pm.

Fire engines were sent from both towns; along with a water carrier.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Crews confirmed the fire was involving a wood pile approximately 10m by 20m which was situated close to three mobile homes.

"They set to work with two hose reel jets.

"At 3.33pm crews were using two main jets and three hose reel jets and requested the attendance of a further fire engine which was mobilised from our Bridgwater Station.

"They also confirmed that the fire has now spread to a further two wood piles.

"At 3.43pm crews have requested the attendance of our telehandler to assist with moving combustible materials.

"This has been mobilised from our Clyst St George specialist rescue team."

Firefighters are currently still on the scene.
