THE battle of the caterpillars has taken over social media - and especially Twitter - over the last month.

Marks and Spencers (M&S) have launched legal action against Aldi, who are selling a similar item M&S's signature cake - Colin the Caterpillar.

Aldi have launched a Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake, which M&S say is too similar to their own signature sweet treat.

One Taunton student took it upon herself to make light of the situation and make people smile during a year which has been difficult for many.

Ellie Veale, a performance and theatre student in her last year of university, dressed up as Cuthbert the Caterpillar and headed to supermarkets in Taunton and Bridgwater.

"I decided to make a humorous video concerning Cuthbert and Colin, the oppressed caterpillar cakes, of course all in jest," said Ellie.

"These videos have had thousands of views and likes on Tik Tok.

"And then I thought I would dress up as a caterpillar and put a smile on people’s faces by visiting stores in Somerset."

Ellie visited the M&S garage and Aldi in Taunton, as well as M&S, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Subway and Jollyes.

She used a lettuce leaf as a microphone and visited the shops to put a smile on people's faces.

"When I first went into a shop, I was a bit nervous, but then I got used to people different reactions and there were people outside the shops who wanted photos with me," she added.

"It was quite good to see peoples reactions face to face as we’ve been in lockdown for so long.

"To be honest, I think it’s a very silly debate.

"This is over a cake, and there are a lot more important things going on in life.

"But of course, I am siding with Cuthbert."
