A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a blaze at Bridgwater and Taunton College

Firefighters were called to the campus, in College Way, Bridgwater, at around 3.30am yesterday (February 18), with 15 fire crews from across the county attending the scene.

Motorsport and motorcycle training workshops on the campus were destroyed by the fire.

An investigation by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service concluded the fire was stared deliberately.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed a man was arrested on suspicion of arson in the early hours of Friday morning (February 19) and remains in police custody.

"Police are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam or CCTV footage which could help their investigation into an arson at Bridgwater College which has caused significant damage," an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said.

"Officers were alerted to the fire at about 3.30am on Thursday, February 18. Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue tackled the blaze and fire examiners established the cause was suspicious.

"A man was arrested on suspicion of arson in the early hours of Friday 19 February and remains in police custody at the time of writing.

"Enquiries continue and anyone with information which could help is asked to call 101 quoting reference 5221035404.

"Alternatively ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. They never tell the police who you are, just what you know."
