DESPITE there being 110 new confirmed Covid cases in Somerset in the latest 24-hour period, the rate of the spread of the virus does appear to be slowing.

The latest positive tests were 16 in South Somerset, taking the district's overall total since the start of the pandemic to 4,703.

Somerset West and Taunton had 30 positive tests (overall total 5,487); Sedgemoor saw 40 new confirmed cases (overall total 4,668); and Mendip had 24 positive tests (overall 3,066).

The total number of confirmed cases in the county council area since the start of the pandemic is now 17,924.

The rate of infection based on the latest rolling seven-day figures is 138.4 per 100,000 people in South Somerset (down from the previous day's 155.6).

In Somerset West and Taunton the rate of infection is 194 (down from 197.9); in Sedgemoor it is 164 (up from 161.6); and in Mendip it is 117.7 (down from 125.4).
