THERE'S been a big drop in the Covid-19 infection rate in Somerset, according to the latest figures.

The seven-day rolling figures for positive tests for the virus show the rate of infection in the county council area have gone down in all four districts.

The latest rates are 155.6 people per 100,000 of population in South Somerset, down from Friday's rate of 175.2.

In Somerset West and Taunton the rate dropped to 197.9 from 243 on Friday.

Sedgemoor decreased to 161.6 from the previous 198.1.

And Mendip stands at 125.4, dipping from 153.1

The latest 24-hour period saw a total of 89 positive Covid tests in the county.

The total was made up of 18 new confirmed cases in South Somerset; 25 in Somerset West and Taunton; 37 in Sedgemoor; and nine in Mendip.

The overall totals since the start of the pandemic now stand at 4,687 in South Somerset; 5,457 in Somerset West and Taunton; 4,628 in Sedgemoor; and 3,042 in Mendip.

There have been 17,814 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the county since the start of the pandemic.
