A SCHOOL in Somerset has been recognised for its work within the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Millfield School, Street, not only worked hard to deliver online lessons, but also got involved with the community to help those in need.

And so Glastonbury and Street Lions Club presented the school with a certificate of appreciation for the pupils and staff, to thank them for the help they have given throughout the year,

The school provided more than 1,000 meals to Somerset school children who were eligible for free school meals and their families access to food during the closures.

Millfield parents and staff raised more than £16,00 to fund 40,620 meals for 160 families every week during term time and the summer.

The school helped in many other ways as well:

  • Students launched a messaging system for residents in four local care homes
  • The school, alongside the community, produce 700 PPE masks
  • Millfield volunteers sewed scrubs and delivered thousands of prescriptions, leaflets and food shopping
  • The school donate more than £2,500 worth of produce to the Salvation Army and other charities
  • Staff were available for ‘befriending calls’ with lonely residents

“As a school we are proud to have been a pillar of strength for students, staff and residents in our local area in Street and Glastonbury,” said headteacher Gavin Horgan.

"Within our community, Millfield very quickly immobilised its resources to offer essential services to the local residents of Street and Glastonbury, working as a partner organisation for the Parish Council’s Community Support Group assisting central Somerset’s outreach programme.

“I think this time has shown that when times are tough, community spirit and coming together really can conquer anything.

“We are honoured to have been acknowledged by the Street and Glastonbury Lions Club for the work we did together during the pandemic – our relationship with our local community is incredibly important to us here at Millfield, and we are excited for the ongoing initiatives that we will work together on in the future.

“However, none of this would have been possible without the involvement of Mendip District councillor and former Millfield student Liz Leyshon.

"She brought the group together, and our incredible students who showed such generosity and thoughtfulness, so they deserve all the recognition.”

During Christmas, Millfield delivered a Christmas dinner to 50 families in need, as well as collecting coats to keep them warm in the winter.

The music department are working on a community choir project with local primary schools in Street and Bath Camerata. The group is planning a performance of 'Freedom' in June 2021.
