FIRE crews tackled a blaze in Frome for nearly two hours last night (December 1).

There was a fire in the basement of the property in Charlton, which was spreading to the ground floor.

Crews arrived at the incident at 9.30pm and left at 1.15am, after the electricity had been isolated by Western Power.

The fire was believed to be accidental and everyone in the building was accounted for.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "On arrival the incident commander confirmed that there was a fire in the basement that was spreading to the ground floor. Four breathing apparatus wearers using one hose reel jet and one main jet were in use.

"At 10.11pm, the number of breathing apparatus wearers was increased to six with two main jets in use and one hose reel jet.

"At 10.40pm crews reported that the gas had been isolated. The fire was reported to have also burnt through to the ground floor. All persons were accounted for. Police were requested to assist with traffic management due to the number of vehicles on scene.

"At 11.01pm, crews requested the attendance of the electricity board to isolate the main electrical supply.

"At 11.12pm, the incident was being scaled back to two pumps. The fire was out and crews were cutting away to expose hotspots and ventilate the property. Two breathing apparatus wearers were using one hose reel jet and small tools.

"At midnight, crews were still damping down. It was confirmed that the electricity had been isolated by Western Power.

"The fire within the basement spread to the ground floor stairwell. The basement and stairwell sustained approximately 30 per cent fire damage and 80 per cent smoke damage with the rest of the property sustaining 20 per cent smoke damage."
