TWO Hinkley Point B workers are celebrating after graduating from their EDF apprenticeships.

Lewis Gilks-Merrill, 24, from Glastonbury, and James Cant, 22, from Bridgwater, were both presented with graduation certificates at a special socially distanced ceremony at the power station after successfully completing their four-year advanced modern apprenticeship with the company.

Peter Evans, Hinkley Point B’s Station Director, who presented the pair with certificates, said: “In these challenging times it’s really good for us, as a station, to have something to celebrate.

"As a former apprentice myself I know how important it is to get a good grounding, and wider understanding of, the business you’re going into.

“The experience I gained during that early part of my career has stood me in good stead for more than four decades in this industry. Lewis and James now have the tools they need to succeed wherever their careers take them.

"It always gives me great pleasure and pride to see our apprentices develop and go on to have successful careers within the business.

“I would like to congratulate both Lewis and James on graduating and for being a credit to EDF, Hinkley Point B and their communities. EDF is committed to training future generations of workers and it is only right that we celebrate their achievements”.

It was a double celebration for Lewis, after he was also named as Hinkley Point B’s apprentice of the year.

“I have enjoyed learning my trade as a mechanical apprentice with EDF, and it is a real honour and a privilege to be presented with the station’s apprentice of the year award," Lewis said.

“The apprenticeship scheme has taught me both practical and personal skills, and I am really looking forward to applying and using what I have learnt in my new role as a maintenance technician at Hinkley Point B.”
