BUSINESSES in Wellington are being warned to be on their guard following reports of fake Bank of Scotland £50 notes circulating in the town.

According to PCSO Steve Hill, the notes are being used to buy cheap items, with the culprit collecting the change from an unsuspecting shop assistant.

PCSO Hill said a note he saw yesterday (Monday) was "not bad", although the hologram was "just a sticker".

He posted on social media: "There appears to be a number of fake Scottish £50 being circulated.

"The suspects tender the note for a very low costing item, then pocket the change.

"(Yesterday's) note was not bad, but the hologram was just a sticker.

"Please beware of anyone who is trying to spend these notes."
