CHRISTMAS is coming - and after a difficult year, a new town competition hopes to make the 2020 festive period one to remember for many.

North Petherton's annual Christmas Lights contest is set to get bigger and better, giving more festive households the chance to win.

The town council has agreed to step up their efforts in a bid to 'make this Christmas even brighter than it was last year'.

At last week’s council meeting town mayor, Cllr Alan Bradford, said that it was more important than ever during these difficult times make the most of the festive season, while continuing to stay safe.

He therefore proposed that the popular Christmas decorations competition should be expanded to recognise the efforts made by local people to light up their homes and to encourage more to join in.

“I have been very impressed by the wonderful displays that people have created in the past, but we have only been able to officially recognise one winner," Cllr Bradford said.

"I propose that this year we should have a competition for each of our areas and then I will award a cup for the overall winner."

WINNER: Nigel and Sally Baker's home in 2019, which scooped the top prize

Last year, Nigel and Sally Baker won the top prize for their efforts decorating their home in St Mary's Crescent, North Petherton.

However, judges cited many homes across the town, and the new awards are set to recognise areas further afield.

And, at the meeting, fellow councillors wholeheartedly supported the mayor's proposal, with members agreeing to donate separate trophies for North Petherton, North Newton, Moorland and Wilstock/Stockmoor.
