THREE Painswick cricketers are planning to walk from their club to Lord’s next month to raise money for new nets.

The 100-mile challenge is being undertaken by Tom Hayward, George MacDuff and Dom Barnard at the start of the half-term holiday.

The trio will be setting off on Saturday, October 24 with the aim of arriving at the home of cricket sometime on the Monday.

The plan is to complete 45 miles on the first day when they will overnight in Oxford and then tick off another 35 miles with Beaconsfield the target before rounding off with a shorter final leg to Lord’s.

Members of George’s family have offered overnight accommodation, while the trio will also be backed by a support team carrying bags and offering encouragement en route.

Half term is the perfect time for the men to complete the walk as Dom is a teacher at Cashes Green, Tom teaches at Coopers Edge in Gloucester and George is undergoing his teacher training course at University of Gloucestershire.

Dom, who has been a youth coach at Painswick for 20 years, said: “Our current nets are old and no longer adequate so we thought we would do our bit to help raise money to replace them.

“Nets are an essential element of supporting our junior and senior teams.”

It is estimated that the new facility will cost around £30,000 with grants from the ECB and the Gloucestershire Cricket Board set to cover a significant amount of the total.

The walkers are hoping to raise at least 50 per cent of the cost themselves.

George and Tom, have also helped with coaching at Painswick for the last six years, with George having played for the club since the age of seven.
