AN ARTICULATED lorry suffered significant damage after catching fire near Bridgwater earlier today (Wednesday, September 16).

Firefighters from Bridgwater, Taunton and Burnham-On-Sea were sent to the scene at Shearston Lane in North Petherton shortly after 10am this morning.

On arrival crews confirmed the lorry was well alight at the front of the vehicle, and used hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "The lorry was 90 per cent damaged by fire. An Environmental Protection Unit from Taunton was also sent to assist with a diesel spillage."

The road had to be temporarily closed due to the diesel spillage.
