Bridgwater III 272-6 beat Burnham-on-Sea 269-6 by 4 wkts

BURNHAM-ON-SEA 1st XI suffered their first defeat of the 2020 league campaign, despite a second century in as many weeks from Brad House.

House’s 111 helped the visitors post 269-6, but Bridgwater 3rds chased it down as the Stags had a day to forget in the field.

Winning the toss and batting first, Burnham got off to a flying start as House scored 16 runs in the first over.

Fred Berry (0) fell to Callum Pope (4-34), which brought captain Rob Driver in to join House, and together they began to dominate the bowling attack, finding the boundary regularly.

They brought up the 100 partnership in the 16th over, and House sealed his own ton with a six over square leg - coming off 61 balls.

He was eventually caught for 111 (67 balls, with 15 fours and four sixes), but Driver carried on and was unfortunate to fall short of his own century, caught and bowled by Pope for 94 (104 balls, 11 fours, three sixes).

Kieran Tasker added 21 on his 1st XI debut, and Burnham finished on 269-5, which looked a good total on a pitch which offered a fair bit for the bowlers.

So it seemed early on, with Connor Lefrere (2-33 off eight overs) dismissing home skipper Tim Netto (7), but the other bowlers struggled as Pope (80) and Dominic Court (86) kept the runs flowing.

Peter Harris claimed the vital wicket of Pope, then took two more to finish with 3-36 off eight and swing momentum back in Burnham’s direction.

Michael Skidmore (60*) had the final word, however.

With Bridgwater requiring 10 runs off the last two balls, Skidmore struck back-to-back boundaries to take his side over the line.

Lympsham & Belvedere 259-5 beat Uphill Castle 213 by 46 runs

LYMPSHAM & Belvedere were 46 runs too good for visitors Uphill Castle on a warm and sunny Saturday.

The visitors’ bowling was a little wayward but caused the home batsman to play and miss on several occasions, and Tom Elstone (2-39) had Dave Luff (6) caught early on.

Jack Luff joined Nathan Hancock and they set about laying the platform for a good total, with both batsmen looking in good touch driving well down the ground and punishing anything short of length.

Both reached their half-centuries before continuing the onslaught as they put together a partnership of 216 - Luff reaching his century (with 12 fours and four sixes) before being caught for a tremendous 106.

A tiring Hancock batted brilliantly for his 81 before being run out by a good throw by Elstone in the deep.

After a couple of cheap wickets, George Nuttycombe (5*) and Gabriel Counsell (3*) brought up a fine total of 259-5 off their allotted 40 overs.

Come the reply, Sam McCrea (1-23) got Lympsham off to the perfect start, bowling Elsone (1) in a lively opening spell.

George Chapman (28) and Luke Morgan (43) tried to keep up with the run rate, but Andy Taylor (1-46) bowled the dangerous Chapman, before Jack Luff ran out Jermain Jones (30) with a direct hit.

Morgan and Paddy Holyday kept ticking along before Jack Luff (1-18) bowled the latter for 14, and Tom Llewellyn (5) was caught by Counsell off Tom Gooding.

Wickets continued to fall regularly, and finally Lympsham had their man as Morgan was well caught by Hancock off Matt Davis, who picked up two more wickets to finish with 3-37.

Uphill were finished off by Gooding (3-36), with the visitors all out for 213.

Man of the match (sponsored by Ros Dark) went to Jack Luff, while Nuttycombe again performed well behind the stumps.

Lympsham make the short journey to Huntspill & District this Saturday, looking to continue their winning streak.
