THREE community groups in Somerset have received a cash boost.

The Glastonbury and Street Lions Club (CIO) has made three donations to local groups providing support to communities in these exceptional times after it was awarded a share of £140,000 from the Lions Clubs Foundation of the British Isles, a special fund launched to support local communities during the COVID-19 crisis.

In its application the club said it would match-fund any grant, so £600 very quickly became £1,200.

Groups who have each received £400 are the Glastonbury Foodbank, the Street Foodbank and Street Baptist Church Meals on Wheels service.

The club’s president, Lion Brenda Wood, said: “This is a significant sum of money that we are putting to good use straightaway.

"This Coronavirus pandemic is hurting lots of local people and we wanted to provide support to those helping those in need in our community.

"When a humanitarian crisis strikes, the Lions Clubs Foundation of the British Isles works with and are guided by their own Lions members who are ordinary people actively working at the heart of their communities.”
