A BREAN holiday home owner is calling on the council and holiday parks to take more action to tackle climate change after plans to fell a protected tree were submitted.

Jane Norman, who owns a holiday home at Ocean Lodge in Brean, said her concerns were first raised about the issue after a planning application was submitted to fell a mature tree on land opposite The Paddocks Caravan Park in South Road, Brean.

A Tree Preservation Order was put on the tree in 2008 and Jane said while she plans to object to the application she thinks more needs to be done by Sedgemoor District Council and holiday parks in the area to tackle climate change.

“We shouldn’t be felling mature trees. They can be home to wildlife,” Jane said.

“It does not make sense to fell something that has been there for more than 100 years.

“Surely we need to preserve these trees as they are part of our ecology.

“We need to take responsibility for the environment that we live in.

“We have to make things sustainable, change things in small steps to make them sustainable.

“We need to start thinking about what we can change to reduce our impact on the environment.

“A lot of holiday parks in the area sell lots of plastic toys like buckets and spades during peak holiday season and often they are just left on the beach.

“These things could wash into our oceans and have a damaging affect our wildlife.

“There are lots of great community run schemes which help to clean up our coastlines but I think Sedgemoor District Council need to take more responsibility for tackling climate change.

“I don’t really feel that the council is taking it very seriously.

“I feel like they need to take more action as so far I haven’t seen that much has been done since the council declared a climate emergency last year.”

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council, said: “The tree which is subject of a planning application is structurally unsafe and there will be one replanted in its place.

“We are looking at and taking practical measures as an organisation and a further £75,000 has just been allocated in the budget to further this work.”

The Weekly News contacted Brean Leisure Park and Warrens Farm Holiday Centre for comment but they did not respond before this article went to press.
