AN ICONIC town centre building has been sold and could soon be open as a cafe and bar.

The Winchester Arms, in Castle Green, was put up for sale for £500,000 at the end of last year.

Exeter-based estate agents JLL sold the grade II listed property to Gael MacKenzie.

The businessman, who runs similar ventures in Bristol and Swindon, plans to open a MacKenzies cafe and bar.

Michael Easton, of JLL, said:‘The Winchester Arms is an impressive site within the historic centre of Taunton.

"The front façade is believed to date from the late 18th century and the building exterior generally creates an attractive impression within Castle Green.

"We are delighted that Gael has bought the property from our clients and look forward to seeing MacKenzies become a popular fixture on Taunton’s café scene.

"Terms were agreed just before Christmas and the transaction went smoothly for all parties involved.

"The market generally has responded positively in this sector over the past couple of months and we have new announcements for Taunton coming soon."

It is hoped the new venue will be open in the summer later this year following an 'extensive refurbishment'..

Mr MacKenzie said: We are delighted to have secured the site for our third Mackenzies, and we will be investing significantly to produce something that really compliments the lovely public realm of Castle Green.

"Following an extensive refurbishment we aim to be open this Summer and become a firm fixture on the Taunton food and drink scene providing something for everyone."
