‘A DOZEN lights along the Esplanade don’t work...it’s an accident waiting to happen.’

Those are the words of Colan Walker who said he has fears someone will be injured if street lights between Burnham-on-Sea Esplanade and Burnham Yacht Club are not fixed.

The 45-year-old from Penrith Avenue in Burnham said he was ‘appalled’ when he discovered around a dozen street lights along the route were not working while he was walking on Tuesday (December 17) and said some of them are in a state of disrepair.

Colan said: “From the yacht club all the way to the skate park along the Esplanade there is no lighting at all.

“About a dozen street lights in a row are broken and at the other end of the esplanade it’s a bit hit and miss too.

“The light covers are hanging off on some of the posts and some of the lights around Burnham Pier are very dull and not very bright.

“There is no lighting at all behind the tourist information centre or BARB Search and Rescue’s station.

“It’s awful along there, really dark. Someone could easily slip over around there in puddles or in dog mess as you cannot see anything.

“It is an accident waiting to happen.”

Colan said he has reported the issue to Somerset County Council and Sedgemoor District Council urged them to fix the lights as soon as possible.

He said he thinks the council should invest more funding into maintaining street lights along the route.

“I think they should invest in new bulbs and replace the broken ones along the Esplanade,” Colan said.

“I also think they should put some spot lights behind BARB Search and Rescue and the tourist information centre as it is particularly dark there at night.

“I would urge anyone walking along the Esplanade towards the yacht club to be very careful and to be wary of any puddles or mess.

“It would be awful if someone was injured.”

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said they have only had reports that three lights along the route have been damaged and the lights are being repaired.

“We have a record of three lights which were storm damaged at the weekend (December 14/15),” the spokesperson

“One of the lights has been repaired but two have been taken down and sent away for repairs to be carried out.”
