BRINGING smiles to everyone’s faces is this year’s pantomime - Aladdin - at the Tacchi Morris Arts Centre in Taunton with Reamba Productions.

The more pantomimes I watch, the more I realise the combination of fun light-hearted comedy and “grown-up” jokes, are a great way for a family to enjoy an afternoon out.

Sam Stay, returning to the Tacchi Morris, was an energetic and comedic Wishee Washee. Keeping the audience engaged throughout, as well as improvising when receiving unexpected heckles from the audience, he kept the show running smoothly.

Another character who caught my eye was Abanazar, played by Ashley Ross-Quinn, with his deep mesmerizing villainous voice. He commanded the attention of the audience and I loved the rendition of Queen’s I want it all.

The songs throughout the pantomime were a wonderful mixture – some well-known that we started to sing along with, and some that we were just happy to sit and listen too.

Louise Cannon, Princess Jasmine, and Richard Sims, Aladdin, had a few singing scenes which were certainly magical, and these moments were a great break from the comedy.

It was nice to see a stronger and more prominent Princess Jasmine in this version of the panto. She was dismissive to her lady’s in waiting and knew exactly what she wanted the moment she saw Aladdin.

Matthew Kennedy graced the stage as the intriguing Widow Twankey. With his fabulous costumes, Matt, alongside Wishee Washee, had some hilarious comedic moments which made everyone smile.

The professional ensemble of Martha Taylor, Ashleigh Payne and Hannah Mills did an incredible job and filled the gaps between the well-known Aladdin storyline. I must also add that the dancing throughout the show was wonderful – in time and beautifully choreographed.

The last and most magical character I want to mention was of course the genie, played by Jessica Stephens. Not only does Jessica have a beautiful voice, she is a great dancer and played the character of the genie well throughout. And her love for a certain character made everyone smile…but I won’t give that away. You’ll have to see the panto yourself.
