An inspirational Somerset social worker has enjoyed ‘one of the best days of her life’ after bagging a top award.

After more than forty years of dedicated service, Somerset County Council’s Chris Denovan, a locality manager from East Huntspill, was awarded silver in the Lifetime Achievement category at the prestigious annual Social Worker of the Year Awards.

The award recognises Chris for a lifetime of commitment to the community and for becoming a role model and inspiration to the profession.

She said: “I had one of the best days of my life on Friday and it was incredible to receive the Silver Award for Lifetime achievement. I have been overwhelmed by all the lovely comments on social media by my colleagues.

“How lucky am I to have worked for SCC for over four decades and worked with amazing people.”

Chris has been a driving force behind Somerset’s innovative Community Connect approach. She and her team also featured in the BBC Panorama documentary earlier this year which highlighted the important role of social work and adult social care.

The accolade was presented at a prestigious ceremony, hosted by TV chef and emotional wellness advocate, Lorraine Pascale, at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.

The judging panel described Chris as a well-respected and dedicated social worker, who has been instrumental in improving outcomes for people in Somerset over an impressive career spanning four decades.

Somerset County Council’s Mel Lock, lead commissioner of adults and health services, said: “Chris is an inspirational social worker and leader, and I am so pleased that her achievements have been recognised. Somerset is incredible lucky to have Chris working with us, her dedication, drive and ambition for the people of Somerset has touched the lives of so many people.”
