SNOW could hit Somerset today as yellow weather warnings for snow and rain have been issued across the South West.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain in Somerset, which covers Highbridge, Wells, Glastonbury and Burnham-on-Sea, and will be in place until 11.45pm today (November 14).

And they have also issued two yellow weather warnings for snow which cover the higher roads in Wales and the West.

The weather warnings, which will be in place until 10am today, cover much of south and mid-Wales, the M5 corridor where it passes through Gloucestershire and Worcestershire and parts of Somerset including Wells and Midsomer Norton.

Flurries of snow hit Somerset for the first time this winter on Wednesday (November 14) as images from PCSO Linda Brooks showed snow on the ground in the Winsford, near Exmoor.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The Met Office said some roads and railways are 'likely' to be affected by lying snow and warned people that there could be delays to travel by road, bus and train.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said warned residents in the South West that there is a 'small chance' homes and businesses and homes could be flooded by the rain.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life," the spokesperson said.

"Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads."

Travel Somerset said gritting crews will be heading out to Exmoor this morning to monitor conditions and treat roads as there is an increased snow risk.
