A CARE home for people with learning disabilities has been told to improve after its latest inspection.

Church Road care home was visited by Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors in July, and was rated as 'requires improvement' in the report, published in September.

The service was rated as needing to improve in being safe, caring and well led, but was ranked 'good' for being responsive and effective.

The report highlighted some issues with the management of some medicines and staff's awareness of safeguarding procedures.

A spokesman for the CQC said: "Safeguarding concerns were investigated internally but not always reported to the local authority or the CQC.

"Not all staff were aware of external safeguarding reporting procedures.

"We received some mixed feedback relating to the staffing levels.

"Some aspects of medicines management needed to be improved.

"Some concerns were raised relating to the staff culture of the service which the provider was in the process of addressing.

"The systems in place to monitor and improve the quality of the service were not fully effective. The provider and deputy manager demonstrated they were committed to making improvements to the service and had started taking action to address concerns."

The report also praised highlights at the home, including its caring staff members who receive regular training.

"We reviewed staffing rotas that demonstrated there were enough staff available to meet people's needs. Staff were recruited safely," a CQC spokesman said.

" People told us they liked the staff and felt involved in their care.

" The provider and deputy manager demonstrated they were committed to making improvements to the service and had started taking action to address concerns."

Ellen Poynton, managing director for the South West region at Voyage Care, said changes are already underway at the home and families should feel reassured their loved ones are in good hands.

She said: “The quality of the care we provide to the people we support is our utmost priority.

“We regret that the care and support provided at Church Road at the time of the inspection did not meet the high standards we expect of ourselves.

"Since the inspection we have put in place a robust action plan, and the team have been working hard to ensure a return to our sector-leading quality of support.”
