A HUGE fire has caused part of a hotel to collapse onto an A road.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called to the Premier Inn Hotel at Cribbs Causeway in Bristol at 1.17pm on Wednesday (July 17) and more than 50 firefighters have been battling through the night to bring the blaze under control.

The front of the Premier Inn has fallen on to the A4018 Cribbs Causeway and smoke from the blaze led to warnings from the fire service about visibility problems on the M5.

A fire service spokesman confirmed this morning (July 18) that the incident remains ongoing and warned residents to keep their doors and windows closed because of smoke plumes from the site.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service, said three crews remain at the scene.

"Crews from Weston, Bath, Bedminster, Patchway, Southmead & Kingswood remain in attendance and are using three turntable ladders to deliver water to the incident," the spokesman said.

"All local residents should keep doors and windows closed where possible due to the low smoke plume.

"Road closures in the area remain in place. Please avoid the area where possible."

Yesterday Avon and Somerset Police declared a major incident at around 5pm due to the amount of emergency services at the scene.

Cribbs Causeway, the A4018, is closed in both directions between Clifton Rugby Club and Lysander Road.

North Bristol NHS Trust has also advised patients and staff to allow plenty of time to travel in today saying: "The A4018 Catbrain Road is closed both ways due to the fire at the Premier Inn."
