BATTLING villagers in Combwich were celebrating this week in 1989 after securing a victory in the bid to beat traffic on their roads during the proposed construction of Hinkley C.
Villagers turned out in force for the opening of a two-day hearing to consider applications for compulsory purchase orders on walls and gardens in Brookside Road, but less than two hours later, proceedings came to a sudden halt when it was revealed authorities preferred an alternative route.
Authorities said they changed their minds over the route after the campaign by residents, joined by MP Tom King.
Meanwhile, our picture shows what residents were fearing, with a lorry being shown transporting materials for the Hinkley Point project in Brookside Road, Combwich, in 1959.
This was the same route proposed for Hinkley C in 1989 - and rejected.
