THE 65 (Bridgwater& District) Squadron, Air Training Corps recently spent an evening being instructed in the basics of church bell ringing by the Saint Mary’s Bells, Bridgwater, Bell Ringing Team.

A total of 20 Cadets from the Squadron attended the evening session hosted by Richard Lee, tower tutor for St Mary’s Bell Ringers alongside four of the Saint Mary’s Bells, Ringing Team.

Following a tour of the Tower and a brief on the history of the bells and church, the cadets then enjoyed a session trying out the bell ringing itself. With the Bell Ringing Club looking for new members it also provided young people from the local area with a potential new hobby to take up and a greater awareness of the history of one of the town’s most significant landmarks.

The evening was part of a number of sessions organised across the year to allow the cadets to try new activities and opportunities in the area.

The Squadron continues to grow rapidly and is open to young people between 12 (Year 8) and 18 years of age. Running on Mondays and Wednesday evenings throughout the year the unit offers young people opportunities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, flying, gliding, camps, adventurous training and many other activities.

If you are interested in finding out more pop along to the unit between 7pm and 9.30pm on a parade evening.
