A FORMER police station could be turned into housing if plans are approved.

WYG is applying for permission to turn the grade II listed building on Priest Street, which formerly housed Williton Police Station, into two houses.

The application is being submitted on behalf of the clients Avon and Somerset Police.

Planning application for a similar proposal was granted in 2016, but as the force is yet to act on this, the plan must be resubmitted as the three-year expiry date looms.

The plans would see the former police station converted into one three bedroom house and one two bedroom house.

Julian Bolitho, director of WYG, said: "The current application proposals remain unchanged from those approved by the Council in 2016.

"There has been no change in either site circumstances or relevant planning policy considerations that would indicate that a further planning permission and listed building consent should not be granted.

"The proposed conversion of Williton Police Station to provide two residential dwellings fully accords with the requirements of the current development plan and has previously been accepted by the council.

"The police station remains surplus to requirements and, as such, an alternative and viable use needs to be found for this designated heritage asset.

"The context of the site and its surroundings, and the listed status of the buildings, make residential use the most appropriate use to ensure their long-term conservation."

It was announced in 2014 the police station was due to close and co-locate with Minehead Police Station, and the final service closed in Williton in March last year.
