NO doubt some readers found your recent headline ‘He ate my goldfish’ amusing but I found it sad that anyone could be so callous - and I congratulate the RSPCA for prosecuting this case.
Such casual abuse of a sentient creature unfortunately reflects the attitude of many in our society to animals and is why I asked Sedgemoor District Council to stop the Showmen’s Guild from allowing their members to give goldfish as prizes at Bridgwater Fair last year.

While the concession was to put stricter guidelines in place and was welcome, they quite clearly can’t stop this kind of behaviour, when someone has left the fair.
I therefore once again ask Sedgemoor District Council to stop allowing goldfish to be given away at fairs. It is an outdated and unacceptable practice that doesn’t reflect well on our town.
