MANY Bridgwater residents have been wondering what happened to the clock that used to stand on the pavement outside what is now The Mercure Hotel on Broadway.

The clock was a gift to the town from British Cellophane Ltd in the early 1960s.

Once it was taken down ahead of the hotel construction, the clock was taken into safe keeping by Bridgwater Town Council.

Sitting town councillors Dave Loveridge and Tony Heywood invited residents Glen Burrows and Li Gibson along who confirmed the clock was all in one piece.

Town council leader Brian Smedley said the plan now is to restore it and put in somewhere useful - and the council is asking residents to give their ideas on what should be done with it.

Glen Burrows, who is also a member of the Civic Society, is very keen to preserve Bridgwater’s heritage and is happy to co-ordinate the clock project.

People can contact her on glenburrows@btinternet.com with their ideas.

Ms Burrows said: “Suggestions so far include the bus station and the railway station.

"It could also go on the wall close to where it originally was.

"But the important thing is that it’s safe and we want it back. So over to you!"
