RESIDENTS in Sedgemoor wanting to make a difference are being invited to stand for Sedgemoor District Council.

The district council elections take place in May, which could see a change in the councillors who make decisions for the district.

Sedgemoor District Council is encouraging residents who are enthusiastic about their community to attend a drop in event on either January 23 or February 12 to find out more about being a councillor.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council, said: "Whatever you think needs changing in your local community, you could be just the person to help change by becoming a councillor.

"No other role gives you a chance to make such a huge difference to the quality of life for people in your local area.

"Anyone can be a councillor. Your background, qualifications and occupation are not important.

"All that matters is that you have a keen interest in your local community, can spare some time and are passionate about making a difference in Sedgemoor."

The drop in events will take place at the council's offices in Bridgwater House, King Square at 6pm.

Councillor Duncan McHinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council and Councillor Mick Lerry, leader of the opposition, will be speaking at the event as well as council staff that support them.

Residents will have the chance to ask questions about the role and have discussions with council staff.

Cllr McGinty, said: "Anyone considering standing for election in May 2019 will be made very welcome at the event.

"Being a councillor can be a rewarding and worthwhile vocation but it is often underestimated how much work is involved in the role and what is expected of those elected.

"We look forward to welcoming prospective candidates to come along and find out how the council works and where and how they could fit into the democratic decision making process."

To support the event the council has produced a short guide to becoming a councillor, which is available on their website.
