STUDENTS from Foxes Academy set their minds to gathered 100 items to donate to the West Somerset Food Cupboard.

The first-year pupils, who are young adults with learning disabilities, put their maths, English and ICT skills to the test to research what donations were most needed and where they could find the best price.

Assistant head of education, Laura Salter, said: “We, as a team, were extremely proud of the motivation and independence shown by all students involved.

"It is important that they get the opportunity to put into practice their independent life skills of going shopping, using a bus and working to a budget.

"We thank Ann and Ian for coming in to talk to them about the real life benefits of community engagement and how they have contributed to a better Christmas for the people of the local community.”

Ann Gibbs of West Somerset Food Cupboard and Ian McLaren from Minehead Hope Centre were invited to Foxes Academy in Minehead so the young people could present their donations.

Ms Gibbs said: “At this time of year the food cupboard is particularly busy.

"We are so grateful to everyone who donates to us and this contribution from the student and staff at Foxes is fantastic.

"I was very impressed by the students I met and the effort that had been put into choosing items to donate.”
