I REFER to your informative article RE fracking (Mercury, November 27).

Recently, a World Meteorological Organisation report warned that we are approaching a time when the ‘window of opportunity’ to act against climate change is nearly closed.

READ MORE: Could fracking be heading to Somerset?

It therefore beggars belief that our government find it appropriate to issue Petroleum Exploration and Development Licences (PedLs) both in Somerset and nationwide, which will not only add to CO2 emissions but also the far more hazardous gas, methane.

Climate change is not the only issue. Air and water pollution have been shown to cause health problems; property values are affected and increased traffic damages the environment.

When opinion polls repeatedly show the public in support of renewable energy and opposed to nuclear and fracking one is left wondering if we still live in a democracy.
