‘THE son of...’, ‘the brother of...’, ‘husband of...’.

It is difficult to imagine the trauma endured by so many during the First World War - both for those serving and the families at home, desperately awaiting news from their loved ones.

On the pages that follow, we tell the personal stories of some of those who fought for their country - and those who gave their lives.

We also publish the details of more than 3,000 people who made the ultimate sacrifice, thanks to the War Graves Commission, who worked tirelessly to compile a list of those with links to our county.

It is by no means a comprehensive list, but we hope it serves as a fitting tribute to those who fell - and a representation of the scale of loss for thousands of people in Somerset.

Among those who fell was 2nd Lieut Eric Townsend, whose heartbreaking letter to his parents from the front holds a message for us all.

“We shall live as those who by their sacrifice won the Great War. Our spirits and memories shall endure in the proud position Britain shall hold in the future.

“The measure of life is not its span but the use made of it. I did not make much use of my life before the war, but I think I have done now.”

In difficult times, we should heed these words, and remember the sacrifices made by a generation scarred by battle, but that should be remembered with honour.

In the coming days, we will upload stories highlighting the role Somerset played in the 'Great War' - and how you can pay your respects.

Your County Gazette is proud to play its small part in those acts of remembrance.
