'Avoid non-essential travel' is the advice from police as an amber weather warning for snow and yellow weather warning for ice have been issued for Somerset.

Avon and Somerset Police is urging people to stay at home as the Met Office forecasts heavy snow and ice for the county.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for snow and a yellow weather warning for ice which will start on Sunday - from 12am until 11.55pm.  

Police took to social media to urge residents to avoid non essential travel. 

A post on their Facebook page said: "Please be aware of amber and yellow weather warnings in the Avon and Somerset area overnight and tomorrow.

"The amber warning for snow comes into effect at 12.05am Sunday andruns until 9pm Sunday.

Our advice is please avoid non-essential travel during these time frames as driving conditions are likely to be treacherous .

"If you are driving tonight, please try and finish your journey before the amber warning begins."
