COMMUNITY groups and sports clubs are being encouraged to apply for a share of £500k from Sedgemoor District Council.

Groups are being encouraged to make sure they benefit from a £500k fund given to Sedgemoor District Council by EDF Energy as part of its plans to build Hinkley Point C.

Any community group, sports club or school from Bridgwater can apply for a project grant, provided they can meet at least one of the criteria and are within the eligible area.

Successful projects and schemes must seek to increase participation in sport and physical activity.

A spokesman said: "This scheme is known as the Sports and Leisure Fund, which was set up to support community improvements to mitigate the impacts on local sports and leisure facilities and recreational open space in Sedgemoor from the building of Hinkley Point C. This is the second round of grants.

"SASP (Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership) has been commissioned by Sedgemoor District Council to organise two community briefing events at the YMCA, Friarn Avenue, Bridgwater, TA6 3RS, so that any interested groups can get information and advice."

These events will be held on:

  • Thursday March 22 between 6.30pm and 8pm.
  • Tuesday March 27 between 6.30pm and 8pm.

The meetings aim to:

  • Explain the criteria for potential bids and discuss individual projects.
  • Explain the bidding process and timelines.

To attend the meetings, e-mail stating your name and organisation represented to Colin Johnson cjohnson@sasp.co.uk by Monday March 19.
