THE Bridgwater branch of Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) stood at the top of the Fore Street market on Friday to protest against the social injustice of the change in the pension age for women born in the 50s.

A WASPI protest aimed to bring attention to the 'hardship and unfairness suffered by women born on or after April 6, 1951' as a result of the Government’s alterations to the State Pension Age (SPA) and, in particular, highlighted the lack of notice given to the changes by the Department for Work and Pensions.

The ladies spent some time collecting signatures on their petition which will be handed into parliament on the Tuesday, October 11.

The protest formed part of the WASPI National Day of Local Action, where groups from all over the country had a huge range of events to bring their cause to the public’s notice and which has left the public in no doubt of the groundswell of support that this campaign has now gathered.

Sheryl Walmsley, Coordinator for WASPI Somerset said: "We had an amazing day with all of our ladies engaging with members of the public.

"We were delighted with the response received from people from all walks of life and hope this means that more will join our campaign. Hopefully the government will now start to listen."
