A BRIDGWATER woman has been left distraught after four of her cats died of suspected poisoning in a matter of months.

Two of the cats Sophie and Cherry, died on May 3 and a vets lab has confired that they were poisoned with ethylene glycol, one of the primary ingredients in antifreeze.

The news follows the death of two other cats owned by Mrs Doveton around Christmas time.

Vets suspect these two deaths were also caused by poisoning.

The RSPCA is now investigating the deaths and is treating them as potentially suspicious.

RSPCA inspector Hayley Lawrence, who is leading the investigation, said: “To have so many cats in one family die and now to have these last two deaths confirmed by vets as antifreeze poisoning is not only sad and devastating for the owner, but it is a very strange series of events and we are concerned that this may have potentially been a targeted attack.

“Deliberately poisoning any animal in this way is a criminal offence and it is one that we take very seriously.

"If you are found guilty of committing an offence of this nature you can face a £20,000 fine and up to six months in prison.

“We urge anyone who may have any further information about how these cats may have come to have ingested this deadly poison to contact our inspectorate appeal line immediately and in confidence on 0300 123 8018.”
