200 tonnes of blazing hay sparked a call out for fire crews from Bridgwater and Burnham this morning

The crews were called to Pawlett, just before 6am with firefighters using condensed air foam and breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

The scale of the fire, in a building measuring 15m x 30m with 200 tonnes of hay ablaze meant that crews were still battling the flames 2 hours later.

By 9am, firefighters had brought the blaze under control, with 30% of the building damaged by fire and 70% smoke damage to an asbestos roof.

Decontamination of firefighters had to be carried out at the scene due to the asbestos. The contents of the barn have been removed to open air.
