ADULT Learners’ Week - May 15-21 - highlights the benefits of lifelong learning so why not enhance your career by studying for a new vocational qualification with the County Gazette and Home Learning College.

Do you feel like you’re stuck in a rut at work? Do you wish for a more rewarding job? If the answer to these questions is yes then you’re not alone.

Research conducted by our training partner Home Learning College shows that 48% of employees in the South-West are not fulfilled in their current role.

The great news is that it’s never too late to learn new skills that could help you find the perfect job.

In fact, every year thousands of adults decide to boost their skills and knowledge through further study. The benefits of learning in later life are the focus of the 19th Adult Learners’ Week.

There are several paths available if you’re looking to make positive changes in your working life. For example, you could choose to pursue a more senior position in the same company or industry.

Alternatively, you may decide that a complete change of career is the best way forward. In fact, 77% of workers in the South-West have moved into a different line of work at least once in their life and some have changed career two or three times.

“The concept of a job for life is dead,” said Dave Snow, academic director at Home Learning College.

“Instead, people are showing a strong interest in updating their skills and re-training for completely different roles.”

Whichever route you choose vocational courses are an ideal way to gain the knowledge and skills needed to make these changes, as well as demonstrating commitment and enthusiasm to a potential employer.

This is demonstrated by the fact that just under half of bosses in the south say they would hire someone for an entry level position who had a relevant vocational qualification but no hands on experience.
