A SUPERB Edwardian gold, sapphire and diamond hinged bangle, which was spotted on a house visit in Taunton, now has a new home in New York.

Gemmologist and valuer Richard Slater DGA FGA saw the potential of the beautiful bangle on a routine house call in Taunton.

It was one of the top performers in a successful monthly antiques auction at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

A private buyer paid £3,350 for the bangle, which featured a row of 11 graduated round and slightly cushion-shaped mixed cut sapphires, each within an old-cut diamond surround.

A collection of silver Teutonic knights collectively sold for £8,450. These intricate pieces had come from a single owner whose father had collected them over many years. They were based on originals in the Hofkirche, Innsbruck, Austria.

Watches are always reliable performers and names like Rolex and Breitling enjoy a dedicated following.

A pretty lady’s 18ct white gold and diamond rectangular wristwatch, circa 1939 attracted a flurry of interest despite some damage. It was bought for £1,700.

A Breitling, Top Time, gentleman’s vintage stainless steel chronograph round bracelet watch also attracted a lot of attention. It was eventually bought for £1,480.

A pair of early George II silver cast candlesticks with a mark of James Gould, London, 1730 caused a stir and went to a net bidder, who paid £1,700.

In the Oriental section a Chinese Canton garden seat, which was discovered during a house clearance was another star performer.

It had been used as a table lamp, but valuer Simon Rayner realised that was not its original purpose. With the lamp removed, and no damage to the ceramic, its true beauty was revealed.

This delightful, colourful piece in hexagonal form, decorated in the Famille Verte palette with scenes of figures in a court setting was an internet sensation. It was bought for £1,700.

Entries are currently being accepted for the next sale, which takes place on Thursday, June 6. It will be followed on Friday, June 7 by the second quarterly collectors’ sale of the year.
