AN early 19th Century mahogany three-pillar dining table realised £6,800 in Tamlyns Auctioneers’ latest antique and collectables auction held on Wednesday, June 21.

Each section of the table had an octagonal tapering pillar on a shaped base, and could be split into a pair of freestanding breakfast tables. The dining table attracted considerable interest in the room, however it was two telephone bidders who fought for the item until the hammer eventually fell - showing that quality brown furniture is still highly desirable.

The furniture section saw other notable successes, with a Georgian-style mahogany waterfall bookcase selling for £400; a Victorian mahogany circular tilt-top breakfast table, £380; and a pine refectory table, £300.

Further included in the auction was a 19th century un-named violin together with an old bow with ivory frog, and another unmarked bow housed in an 19th Century mahogany case with fitted interior. Once again the successful bidder was on the telephone, securing the violin for £850.

Other notable highlights from the sale saw a 19th century matching pair of blue and white double-gourd Chinese vases with covers realise £500; a collection of eight original Fougasse ‘Careless Talk Costs Lives’ posters, £320; a Julian Trevelyan (1910-1988) artist’s proof etching, £380; and a Walter Moorcroft Pottery clematis flambé pattern vase, £300.

The jewellery and silver sections of the auction also saw some excellent prices, with a Waltham gold-plated hunting cased pocket watch with a 9ct gold swivel medallion and a gold metal bosun’s whistle realising £550.

Other notable results were an 18ct gold fringe necklace of openwork tear-shaped panels, £380; an Omar Ramsden & Alwyn Carr silver matchbox holder, £300; a 9ct gold half hunter pocket watch, £240; a gents’ ‘Omega Dynamic’ wristwatch in a brushed steel oval case, £220; and a gentleman’s 18ct gold cased, ‘Gleencar’ manual wristwatch, £210.
