Profile:

I have been a Councillor in Burnham North for 30 years.  I am currently the Leader, and Deputy Mayor of the Burnham on Sea & Highbridge Town Council, I have served the Town as Mayor on two previous occasions. I also serve on Sedgemoor District Council, and I am in my 10th year on Somerset County Council.

I am currently the Vice-Chairman of Somerset County Council. and I sit on the Adults and Health Scrutiny Committee, and Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority.   I have recently been appointed as a consultant for the South West Regional Adoption agency.

I have previously been the Chairman of the Corporate Parenting Board, and Cabinet support for Adult Social Care. I really enjoy all aspects of my council work but having the honour of being Vice-Chairman of Somerset is very special, and I am enjoying getting out and about throughout our County and meeting so many amazing groups and individuals, and also seeing first-hand how other councils operate.

I am a very active councillor and I have achieved a number of things locally to the benefit of our community. I have secured funding and support for a number of Highways improvements such as traffic calming in Stoddens Road, and a new pedestrian crossing and an upgraded crossing in Berrow Road. I am also a member of the Burnham Evolution team that secured £350,000 grant funding from the Hinkley Community Impact Mitigation Fund. The funds will be spent on improvements to Burnham’s sea front, and the Princess Theatre and Arts centre, where I hold the position of the chairman of the management committee, and also volunteer as duty manager on occasions.

I will be working closely with Sedgemoor’s economic development team, and the Burnham chamber of trade to try and revitalise our town centre. The loss of quality shops is very sad and a trend we must reverse by attracting big name stores.

Tourism is vital to our local economy, and I will fight for funding for more attractions for our visitors and residents as well. We have a lack of wet weather attractions, which I feel must be addressed.

I am an active member of the litter free coastline initiative and I attend the beach cleans. I was a leading member in the plastic free town initiative and I will continue with that successful campaign and improve upon it.

I will also continue to fight for our green belt land around Burnham North to stay green, I appreciate housing is needed but our agricultural, and sorts land in Burnham North is not the place.

Dog fouling on our Esplanade and other areas of our town is at an unacceptable level and action must be taken. I will work with our dog warden and Sedgemoor’s clean surroundings department to rectify this.

Travelers are a constant problem in Pier Street car park and other areas of our town. I will work with our MP James Heappey in his campaign to resolve this issue.

Speeding and anti-social behaviour in vehicles remains a problem and I will work with our local police to try and wipe this out in our town.
