Allotment association's big day out in London

MERCURY readers have once again provided us with an insight into Bridgwater's illustrious history with these fascinating snaps.

Simon Lewis has submitted a delicate document from 1947 of the Crown Produce Club's action-packed day out in London.

The club, which was an allotment association, would have saved up throughout the year to embark on the trip and judging by the itinerary it looks like it was money well spent.

Members left Bridgwater by train at 2.45am and arrived almost five hours later at London Paddington, where they enjoyed a tour of the capital in a luxury coach.

After their trip around London, the group reached Wembley for the Rugby League Cup final clash between Wigan and Bradford Northern, with their grand stand seats costing 10/6 each - 52 and a half pence today.

The group rounded off the day by enjoying a performance at the Coliseum before embarking on the long train trip back to Bridgwater.

Simon, whose great uncles John Newman and Les Anthony were members of the club, said: “My grandmother died some years back and we came across it when my mother was clearing out some items.

“It would have been quite expensive to go on a trip like this back then but there was always a sense of togetherness.

“It would be good if rugby tickets still cost 52p; the stadiums would be full up!”
