BRIDGWATER builders Henry W Pollard and Sons, is asking if anyone can shed any light on an old photo which has been unearthed, which shows how horse power ran their deliveries back in the 1940s.
The old sepia photo was found by former owner Hugh Pollard, when he was going through some old files. The photo shows the company horse, which used to provide the deliveries of building materials around the area.
The horse, whose name remains unknown, is pictured in all its finery, ready to join the parade of the Bridgwater Carnival. The gentlemen pictured with the horse, wearing jodhpurs, cap and tie, is thought to be a Mr Carter, but no one can remember for sure.
Pollard is appealing to anyone who may have any memories about either Mr Carter, the horse, or even the horse-drawn deliveries.
Director Martin Blake said: "It is amazing to see the photo and imagine that all our deliveries were carried out in this way, just over 60 years ago.
"We now carry out building work throughout the West Country and have a fleet of lorries and vans to deliver all our building materials. However, although not very practical now, this was certainly a very environmentally friendly delivery service."
He continued: "I imagine the horse was quite a well known character in Bridgwater, so I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has any memories of that time."
Anyone with any information should contact Martin Blake at Pollards on 01278-422211.
