Martin Hodgson is the chief executive officer of Bridgwater YMCA. Born in Wales in 1974, he was brought up in the Midlands with his two brothers by his parents Bob and Marilyn.
Having attended university in Southampton, Martin then went on to manage outdoor education centres in Dorset and Devon. In 2001 he went to work as a teacher, however the pull of the outdoor life was too much so he moved on to manage the YMCA National Outdoor Centre in Southampton.
In September 2007 he arrived in Bridgwater to run the YMCA. Martin lives in North Petherton with his girlfriend Beckie and his interests include sailing, surfing, golf and generally being outdoors.
What is the best and worst thing about the place you live in?
“Best has to be the people and surrounds - Bridgwater is so welcoming and supportive. Worst is the traffic around Bridgwater.”
What is the best and worst thing about your job?
“Best is the great people, great location and every day is different. Worst - not had one yet, but some people say that if you don't like what you do, you should find something else. Obviously easier said than done in today's climate.”
What was your ambition as a child?
“Can't remember but I think I wanted to swim in the Olympics.”
What has been your greatest achievement?
“Working with the young people, staff and community involved with Bridgwater YMCA's successful bid to the Big Lottery for £4million.”
What characteristic do you dislike most in others and in yourself?
“Being given a challenge and finding it difficult to say no. In others, tarring all young people with the same brush. OK, they are not all angels, but were we all of the time?”
What is your biggest fear?
“Fear itself.”
When and where were you happiest?
“When my partner Beckie moved to join me in April.”
What three items would you take to a desert island?
“Not sure this is in the spirit but, food to last a week or two, a few beers and a boat to get off when I'm bored.”
Who are your dream dinner party guests (maximum five)?
“Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Stephen Fry, Jeremy Clarkson, Dennis Thatcher and Beckie.”
How would you like to be remembered?
“As someone that made a difference.”
