Mo Farah has made it a golden hat trick for Britain at the Olympic Stadium.

In a stunning display of tenacity, talent and speed he beat Kenenisa Bekele, the Ethiopian 5,000m and 10,000m World and Olympic record holder, to win the Olympic 10,000m title.

His wife Tania, who is pregnant with twins, and daughter Rihanna came on to congratulate him on the track. Farah looked stunned but delighted as the crowd roared.

The packed stadium was already buzzing from Jessica Ennis's gold in the heptathlon and a surprise victory from Greg Rutherford in the long jump at the Olympic Stadium.

By the time that Farah had finished his lap of honour, he was drapped in a Union Flag and carrying a giant Wenlock mascot in gold in his arms.

Two-time Olympic 1500m champion Lord Coe said it was "the greatest night of British athletics". Of Farah, he said: "Foot perfect the whole way. Never got sucked into mid-race surges. Covered everything and when it mattered was just too good. The greatest night of British athletics."

Meanwhile, long jumper Greg Rutherford added to Team GB's medal hall as he became the first British man to jump to gold for nearly 50 years. The Milton Keynes born athlete delighted home crowds with a 8.31 metre jump to take gold in the Olympic Stadium.

The 25-year-old beamed for the cameras as he held the Union Flag aloft and hugged his trainers in the stand.

Rutherford, from Milton Keynes - who calls himself the "ginger wizard" and enjoys baking in his spare time - hugged his trainers in the stand after being crowned winner, said: "I knew I was in great shape. My team are incredible and I have the most amazing parents and beautiful girlfriend in the world.

"What a night for British athletics, three gold medals and I can't thank everyone enough. This is what I have dreamed of my whole life."
